Last night played out largely as expressed yesterday. Jacoby Brissett will not hold onto the starting job for long (and he might have just lost it). Rhamondre Stevenson was a huge sell-high. Garrett Wilson would rebound with 17+ points (he had 14.3). Breece Hall and Braelon Allen were poised to become one of the NFL's best one-two punches. And the Jets won 24-3 (instead of 27-10).
My big miss was Aaron Rodgers, who I viewed as a glorified game manager. In his third game back, he looked spry (for a 40-year-old) and in control. Maybe he'll be a matchup-based starter. It helps to have such a catch-friendly backfield, with Hall and Allen combining for seven catches on eight looks. But Rodgers is farther along than I thought he'd be.
I could write a lot more about Stevenson. Such a fascinating fantasy dilemma. If you believe the research showing he's probably headed toward a steep (and essentially irreversible) decline this year, you probably did what I did and faded him. And if you believe he's an outlier, then his rough outing must seem like a fluke.
I stand by the research. We'll see if he defies history.
And as of right now (midnight), it's unclear which Pats QB will start in Week 4. As shared yesterday, I think a Maye-led offense can't do any worse than a Brissett-led offense. New England has virtually no shot at the playoffs, and the Pats presumably would keep Maye under wraps only if he wasn't ready. The fact that he entered yesterday in garbage time shows he's at least somewhat ready -- or ready enough to help lead a 51-yard drive (albeit against a softened Jets D).
Ja'Lynn Polk or Demario Douglas might eventually be rosterable with Maye under center. But if Brissett remains at the helm, there's almost chance at all.
What else jumped out at you in this game?
