We’re on the verge of getting news on Deshaun Watson and Jimmy Garoppolo--obviously for very different reasons. In my Best Ball Superflex slow draft, we’re in the 14th round. Jimmy G, Jacoby Brissett, Geno Smith, and Drew lock are the best QBs available. Apparently, the 12 of us are on the same page, waiting to see how things will play out.
Yesterday, Watson released a statement with the NFL Players Association announcing that they would not appeal the suspension ruling. A cynic (or realist) might think this means Watson knows the ruling will be as favorable as any ruling could be under the circumstances. Putting my personal views aside, it appears likely at this point the Brissett won’t start more than half the season. Even with a full season, Brisett would be a candidate for bottom-five fantasy QB numbers. I know some of you might disagree. But given the Browns' RB talent, presumably they won't ask Brissett to be more than a game manager. We'll probably have a lot to discuss about Watson tomorrow, so I’ll leave it at that for now.
There are reports from PFN and elsewhere the Jimmy G.’s people have been communicating with the Giants' people. Daniel Jones's already tenuous hold on a starting job looks as shaky as ever. New York almost assuredly won’t be a playoff team, and they most assuredly are ready to move on from Jones. Renting Garoppolo (on a renegotiated contract) for a season would be a win-win for both sides and probably would give fantasy managers with Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney, and even Saquon Barkley a boost. Poor QB play and injuries destroyed this team in 2021. There’s a lot of talent on paper. Although Jimmy probably is not “the answer,“ he would immediately be on top-20 radars if he goes to New York as the Week 1 starter.
And then there’s Seattle. Some fantasy analysts have hyped Geno Smith based on what he did in some spots starts last year. Frankly, I don’t see it, and his previous eight NFL seasons back this up. His 2021 game tape tells a very different story than his surprisingly middling stats. And Drew lock couldn’t get it done in Denver. He’s one bad August or possibly too bad NFL games away from sitting on the bench the rest of the season.
So if Jimmy doesn’t join the Giants, he could be a great fit in a run-friendly Seattle offense, doing what he does best: picking his moments with a great receiving corps while limiting mistakes. As shared last month, I believe D.K. Metcalf is vastly overvalued. But if Seattle upgrades at quarterback, he’ll be undervalued. That’s why what happens this week with Garoppolo matters, and why me and my opponents aren't reaching for any of these QBs until the dust settles.
