Final Column of the Season

This will be my final post of the season. 10 things to share. I'll try to move quickly.

First, as sports fans and competitors, it's been a challenging couple of years. As human beings with lives beyond fantasy sports, it's probably been more challenging for many of you. It has for me. All I can say is, it's meant a lot that you'd spend some of your time these past six months with me and the rest of this crew. Your questions, comments, and pushbacks have made this a very cool community, at a time when "community" isn't always easy to sustain.

Second, I started this ninth season of this Facebook page doing what I've always done, not thinking of it as more than a hobby. Halfway through, Pro Football Network hired me, and suddenly this was more than a casual Facebook page. As you've hopefully seen, the DNA of this page hasn't changed. It's still a place for both casual and more serious fantasy footballers. The focus remains on courtesy and answering questions and challenging conventional wisdom. Except now we can do so much more, because the resources of PFN are behind it.

Third, speaking of "more," PFN is a 365-day-a-year sports media company. As fantasy football director, I and my team of analysts write (almost, believe it or not) 365 days a year. We have dynasty content. We have early 2022 rookie rankings. We'll have 50 or more DFS strategy columns throughout the NFL playoffs. So while we're giving you a break from daily Facebook posts, if you're a year-round fantasy footballer, you can still get your fantasy fix anytime on the website, on Twitter, through our podcast, and so on. As always, links to PFN fantasy content can be found at the bottom of this post.

Fourth, a huge thank you to all of you who've taken time to answer fantasy questions, particularly on Sunday mornings, when things usually get hectic. As I've said (too many times), no one has a monopoly on the right answers.

Fifth, another huge thank you to my longtime commenters from the "old" FF4W days. Some have continued to help answer questions, even after the PFN transition, which reinforces what this page is all about. We're here for each other. Sounds corny. But that's what I think about when I sit down to write these column.

Sixth, a huge thank you to PFN analysts Jason Katz, Tommy Garrett, and Jon Helmcamp for diving in and helping to answer questions.

Seventh, keep an eye out in 2022 for ways to create more engagement. We've experimented with Twitter Spaces. I've thought about putting together Sunday morning start/sit Q&A's over Zoom. We could create massive weekly DFS competitions, point-spread contests, and other ways to stay connected and continue to talk football. I've gotten to "know" many of you over the years. In some ways, this community has already transcended Facebook. With PFN, we have more resources than ever before. Let's continue to explore ways to engage on your turf, on subjects you care about.

Eighth, along these lines, the third season of the Premier Fantasy Football League was a huge success. 108 teams. Nine separate divisions. Best performers move up divisions; worst performers move down. If you're a serious fantasy footballer and want to join a free, fun, highly competitive league unlike any other, then message me.

Ninth, we'll pick back up on the Facebook page in May--earlier than ever before--and jump into team-by-team analyses and rookie rundowns and draft strategies and everything else.

10th and finally, as we all know, none of this matters if the content is worthless. If the recommendations are consistently wrong. If the "hot takes" are backed by nothing more than hunches--or conversely, if they're painfully obvious. Predictions can reinforce beliefs, but they need to add something. Predictions can challenge beliefs, but they can't cherry-pick a favorable stat at the expense of more compelling contradictory stats.

For nearly a decade, this page has tried to thread the needle between bold and grounded. There's no roadmap. It comes down to what gets written, and how you respond to it. That's the way it's been since 2013, when I started noticing the same people returning and engaging. There was demand for a slightly different approach to fantasy football. I know, because I demanded it, too. And I couldn't find a website that both challenged me and welcomed me. Since day 1, this page has tried to do both.

So when we return in May, I can promise that we'll continue to produce content that bridges boldness and groundedness. We're looking for contrarian concepts where they exist, and conducting research to see if our thinking is supported by facts. Speaking for myself, sometimes I'm very wrong, like pushing Nick Chubb as elite or dismissing Joe Burrow as a QB2. And sometimes I'm right, like pushing Joe Mixon as a top-5 RB and warning that Derrick Henry was likely to regress and/or suffer a serious injury. My goal is always to be more right than wrong on the big things. That's also my goal for my PFN fantasy team, and we'll spend the coming months analyzing every player to produce thoughtful fantasy assessments--even when they go against everyone else's thinking.

Please be safe, everybody. Reach out if you need anything. Take in all of the fantasy content that interests you on the PFN website and podcast. And looking forward to seeing you back here in May.
