Many of us have a lot riding on this week--commonly the last or second-to-last week of the fantasy regular season.
Over the years I've shared how I've done in my leagues. Used to compete in 2-3 per year. Then no more than two. And recently, just one: the Premier Fantasy Football League, with 107 other members of this community. The last time I missed the fantasy playoffs was in 2012. Not coincidentally, I started blogging on this page in 2013.
Blogging forced me to do more research, so I'd have something useful to write about. Because generic writing--and really, anything generic--is boring. And life's too short for boring. And because I was spending more time researching, I became a better fantasy manager. So from 2013 to 2020, spanning roughly 14-16 leagues, I've made the playoffs every time.
But this year has been different. I've shared ups and downs throughout the season. Started 1-3, and thought I'd drop to 1-4 down 30.5 points heading into Monday night with only Mark Andrews remaining. Then the "Mark Andrews miracle," as we refer to it every day in my house. Yes, every single day I force my kids to pay homage to Mark at a shrine I've built next to our cats' food dishes. Because I'm a good dad.
The next week I was down two points with only my CeeDee Lamb remaining. In overtime against the Patriots, Dallas got into range for a game-winning field goal. Nearly everyone expected their backfield to run it three times to make things easier for Greg Zuerlein. Instead Dak Prescott aired it out to CeeDee for a walk-off touchdown, giving me the victory and forcing me to build another shrine between our cats' water bowls.
Heading into Week 14, I'm a lock to make the playoffs if I win, and I'm out if I lose. All because of some lucky wins and, of course, some unlucky losses. Because luck cuts both ways for most of us. I've scored the fourth most points in my 14-team league, and opponents have scored the second most points against me. That's a tough ratio to overcome. It's not "fair," but of course it's fair, because it's fantasy. And if we start questionining the fairness of luck, why are we even playing?
So three big questions for the community: (1) Which player single-handedly won you a critical week this season? (2) Although I assume you also have a shrine to that player, if for some reason you haven't gotten around to it yet, where do you plan to build it? (3) Who's your luck-driven player in Week 14? In other words, who's someone you need to break through more than he's projected to score?
