Week 8 Monday Night Football Recap

Last night we watched two teams trying to salvage their seasons. For the Giants, a seemingly impossible rash of injuries has decimated a team that, on paper, should be a top-14 offense. Nearly every game they're missing 2-4 of their top playmakers. Returning from multi-week absences, neither Sterling Shepard nor Kadarius Toney could stay on the field. It truly is a "what might have been" season for a team that went all in.

For Kansas City, a largely ugly win coming off a painfully ugly loss last week. At 4-4, they'll limp into their pre-bye matchups against the Packers, Raiders, and Cowboys. Lose two of three, and they might need to win out to snag a wild card spot. (10 other AFC teams are 4-4 or better.) Fantasy-wise, Darrel Williams surprised me with a 6-61 receiving line; congrats to those who ignored my warnings. Travis Kelce played his worst game in years. Tyreek Hill rebounded nicely.

Aside from Kelce's flop, the biggest surprise was Derrick Gore (no relation to Frank). I have a piece running on Pro Football Network today on Gore. Should managers add him off waivers? I'd be very cautious. He was completely phased out in the second half. This could've been a one-game fluke. Or maybe he gets 8-10 touches next week. But Williams is continuing to be utilized as the lead back, and no doubt he deserves to keep that job until Clyde Edwards-Helaire returns. At that point, it could be a true RBBC with Edwards-Helaire and Williams, with Gore perhaps replacing Jerick McKinnon in a 2-3 touch role.

The point is, we shouldn't overreact to one performance from a nearly 27-year-old who entered last night with zero rushing attempts and one catch for his career.

As for MNF predictions, congrats to the dozens of you who correctly picked the Chiefs to win. We can all celebrate that success, though those of you who picked the Giants deserve credit for gutsiness and almost being right. Honorable mention goes to Diego Bobian for predicting a 20-13 K.C. victory. Rick Esterly (24-21) almost won his second crown, while Lazy Daze (24-20) also deserves a shout-out. But the grand prize goes to longtime reader Michelle Cassetta-Andujar, who was one point away (21-17). Your prize awaits you in the next paragraph.

Congrats Michelle!

Okay, enjoy your days. I'll be back this evening with some pre-waiver thoughts. As always, hit me up if I can be helpful, and if you're looking for more things to read and listen to, you can always find more of my stuff and my Pro Football Network colleagues' stuff in the links below.
