Notable Fantasy Storylines of Week 8 Sunday Games

Every Sunday morning I'm struck by the fact that huge NFL storylines are going to develop that day, and no one has any idea what they'll be. We know there will be breakout stars and shocking busts. We're pretty sure there will be injuries--some short-term, and others that could last the rest of the season. Fantasy football keeps us hungry and humble. We're continually trying to make our teams better, and we're also never able to fully relax, because one week could undercut much of what we think we know about our players and their potential.

I just finished writing my weekly Sunday fantasy takeaways piece for Pro Football Network. When it published this morning, it can be found here: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/fantasy-football-takeaways-2021-nflwk-8/. I want to take a moment to share a few thoughts on some major events.

First, Jameis Winston's injury could keep him out for the year, if it's as bad as many are fearing. But from a fantasy perspective, will it matter? The Saints' passing attack wasn't exactly clicking. Can this team get by on Alvin Kamara's dynamic offense and the team's high-end defense? Do they simply need Trevor Siemian or Taysom Hill or someone else to be a placeholder for 2021? In other words, will anything change, fantasy-wise? Rarely does a serious QB injury not matter in fantasy. But at this moment, unless you're rostering Winston, I don't think it changes very much. Essentially, this passing attack has more room to go up than to go down.

If James Robinson misses time, is Carlos Hyde a must-add RB this week? As is often the case, it depends who else you have. But keep in mind the Jaguars next face the Bills. In Jacksonville's lukewarm offense, Hyde's only fantasy upside in Week 9 would be in the passing game. In other words, if he can get 4-5 catches, great. If he doesn't, then you're probably looking at single-digit production from a post-prime back in a terrible matchup. Ty Johnson is probably a better investment.

Derrick Henry has now had back-to-back tough games, and it didn't help that he got hurt yesterday. While he'll probably be fine for Tennessee's next outing, he continues to get overworked: 28 carries yesterday. Jeremy McNichols is one of the best waiver adds this week, and almost no one's talking about him. Any player--regardless of physical prowess--has the capacity to break down. Henry has been carrying this team on his back most weeks. He's doing what no other running back has ever done in terms of usage. Something has to give.

And hey, my DFS 50/50 Lineup of the Week finally hit again. Still an ugly 3-5 on the season. Don't trust me until I get back to .500.
