Fantasy Thoughts on Devontae Booker, Emmanuel Sanders, and Kareem Hunt

A few thoughts as we catch our breath before Wednesday waivers open up:

First, as Tommy Garrett and I shared on today's PFN podcast, Devontae Booker is not a good fantasy solution, even for managers desperate for a win. The best time to trade someone is when their value has peaked. And sometimes the best time to trade an RB handcuff is when they become a short-term starter. Booker is a popular waiver add this week, and he might be rostered if you’re in a deeper league. But don’t get fooled by the allure of high touches and goal-line carries. The Giants’ next two games are against the Rams and Panthers. Booker is a journeyman back with sub-4.0 career yards per carry. The passing attack is currently in shambles. This offense doesn’t have much of a chance. Booker is more useful as a trade chip than as a fantasy starter--and only if your opponent buys into his very slim potential as an RB3+.

Moving on to the Bills: If I were to predict that the 34-year-old Emmanuel Sanders will score more fantasy points this year than 2020 elite receiver Stefon Diggs, would anyone believe me? So what if I told you Sanders has scored more fantasy points than Diggs through Week 5, despite catching nine fewer passes? It’s simply inconceivable that Sanders will continue to be the Bills’ #1 fantasy wideout. Meanwhile, my PFFL opponent knows how much I want to trade for Diggs. Now I'm sharing it publicly. Feels good to be honest.

Finally--and bear with me here--Kareem Hunt is doing the near-impossible. He's the 6th-highest-scoring fantasy running back. For a complementary back, that's insane. But of course, we're talking about an elite Browns backfield, and Hunt is a former bellcow. Of course he has the talent and the opportunity to thrive.

And yet, he's averaging an unsustainable 1.30 fantasy points per touch. For perspective, in his record-breaking 2019 season, Christian McCaffrey averaged only 1.17 fantasy points per touch. 2021 leader Derrick Henry is netting only 0.86 fantasy points per touch. If you keep betting on Hunt, you’re betting on a production level that is nearly unheard of. At the moment you could get almost anyone you want for Hunt. So get anyone you want; cash out now.
