Heading into last Week 14's Monday Night Football Eagles-Giants matchup, the once-vaunted NFC East was mired in a combined 15-game losing streak. 3-10 Washington was still in the playoff hunt. It was an insane situation that concluded with the division going 24-40 (.375).
This year's NFC East already has lost two of its marquee players for the season, diminishing the Giants and wrecking the Cowboys, while Washington is in year 4 of an 8-year resurgence plan (my interpretation, but probably not far off). While Philly is battling its usual array of offensive injuries.
The result is a 5-18-1 (.229) NFC East record and an anything-can-happen divisional title hunt.
My money somehow is on Philly, a franchise that's won or finished second in 17 of the last 20 seasons. Their aforementioned injuries are well documented, and have contributed to Carson Wentz being on pace to double his career-high sack total. That's right: Wentz is on pace to absorb 67 sacks, which would be only a few shy of David Carr's record. He also has the fourth worst QB rating of any starter thanks to an egregious 8/9 TD/INT line.
But I look at Wentz differently. I see a guy who's been playing without his top wideouts, without some starting offensive linemen, without his standout #2 TE and with an ailing and/or diminishing elite #1 TE. He's somehow 10th in fantasy scoring with a soft schedule remaining.
With Miles Sanders out, the lesser Boston Scott and Corey Clement will carry the load. Wentz has strong 250/3 potential in each of the next two games with DeSean Jackson back and Travis Fulgham ascending. Yes, Jalen Hurts could take some touches. But Wentz has faced five top-12 pass defenses so far. He's probably my favorite QB streamer of the week.
On the other side, Daniel Jones has been one of the league's most disappointing QBs after finishing 16th in fantasy points per game last year. With Sterling Shepard on his way back, Jones might actually have his full complement of starting receivers--a rarity.
I gotta say I like these two teams combining for 55+ points, thanks to two pretty bad pass defenses. So give Wentz some love in regular leagues, give Jones some love in two-QB leagues, and (assuming full health), trust that Darius Slayton and Evan Engram will be more involved than last week, and I can't recommend sitting Fulgham after whiffing on him last week; he's obviously playing like his team's #1.
Oh, and as of writing this, it's still unclear if Dallas Goedert will return. If he does--and is a full go--he'll clearly be an instant must-start TE.
