Latest NFL News, and Austin Hooper

Some interesting non-COVID-related developments happening around the league (well, mostly non-COVID-related). So let's take a minute to run through them.

First, as expected, Roger Goodell has extended players' opt-out deadline to this Thursday. Last week I wrote that players are holding all the cards this season--that they could shut this whole season down if even a handful of big names walk away. There are many good reasons to disagree with my sentiments, but Goodell's decision is another sign that he lacks the will to draw a clear line in the sand on an issue as serious as a pandemic. I wouldn't be surprised if the deadline were extended again, particularly if the small wave of opt-outs continues to rise.

In tight end news, Will Dissly passed his physical and remains one of my top 5 TE bargains at his TE-31 ADP. While at best he'll split time with Greg Olsen once he's fully back, at best he'll be the clear #1 later in the year (when the 35-year-old Olsen gets hurt or simply takes a backseat to the ascending Dissly). Elsewhere, nice to see Jordan Reed once again join forces with Kyle Shanahan, this time as George Kittle's backup. Reed's ranking (TE-46) will improve in the coming weeks, as he remains a strong TE1 contender if Kittle goes down. While "on the field" is the obvious question make with Reed, no one can argue with his formidable per-game history of 12.3 points per game.

Sticking with TEs, Delanie Walker is possibly the top free agent at his position and is a nothing-to-lose add at the end of deep drafts, particularly if he lands in the right spot. As with all aging tight ends, he's merely a dart throw. But as we know with COVID, some dart throws could ascend to weekly fantasy viability very quickly.

My question of the day concerns my long-time favorite unlovable, underrated TE, Austin Hooper. Search previous summer posts on this page, and you'll find me repeatedly harping on the fantasy universe's short-sightedness on Hooper, who always (as expected) far exceeds experts' prognostications. This summer his TE-12 ADP appears to be yet another blunder. Jarvis Landry remains a question mark as we limp toward Week 1, and outside OBJ, the rest of the receiving corps is pretty sparse. And since I expect Baker Mayfield will take a step (or two) forward, Hooper should benefit from a fairly capable aerial attack. So at worst, Hooper will be the fourth option in the passing game, and he's got a shot at being #3 depending on Kareem Hunt's usage (or even #2 if Landry isn't ready to start the season).

So this marks the third straight summer Hooper's a strong buy. Jump in and share what you think.
