Preseason Game Observations and Auction Drafting

A lot of folks are drafting this weekend. A reminder that if you want my rankings, sign up using the link at the bottom. They're not ordinary rankings. They have lots of columns and colors. And words.

But really, they're designed the way I like to draft, identifying over- and undervalued players (and the degrees to which they're over- and undervalued). A few hundred of your fellow FF4W peeps sign up each summer. Donate what you want, and the rankings are yours. My next update will go out to subscribers in a couple hours.

Some thoughts on yesterday's preseason games:

Although Damien Harris has been backing up Sony Michel in camp, he looked good last night. And we should never trust Bill Belichick's August depth charts. Remember Rex Burkhead? Remember Chris Hogan? Belichick will turn on a dime if there's a better way to move the offense. Michel remains a great-upside, but also highly risk draft pick.

Houston RB Damarea Crockett got some nice reps against Detroit. He's pushing to be the equivalent of a 2-B RB--Lamar Miller's backup, but also with Duke Johnson interfering a bit. Crockett will be a name to watch if one of the two guys in front of him ever sits.

Carlos Hyde lost a fumble. Darwin Thompson didn't. Hyde's averaged one lost fumble per season since his 2014 rookie campaign. On the other side of the ball for Pittsburgh, James Conner ran well. Jaylen Samuels ran better. Honestly don't know how/whether K.C.'s defense changed--whether Samuels ran against a softer D. But this is probably the fifth reminder that Conner is very risky at his RB-11 ADP. In other words, I'm letting opponents draft him, and I'm reaching for Samuels at his generous RB-42 ADP.

Nice to see Deon Cain healthy and making a case for a Week 1 role. I'm deliberating avoiding Devin Funchess in drafts, in part because of Cain.

Elsewhere in the handcuff department, the Rams' Darrell Henderson didn't run well, but he did catch six balls for 38 yards. And Tony Pollard ran very well for the Cowboys. Of course, thanks to Twitterer Tina Parker (@og10mom), we all know Zeke Elliott recently flew from Cabo San Lucas back to Dallas. So . . . maybe adjust those rankings. But only maybe, because rumor has it Zeke has enough money to purchase a flight back to Cabo.

Because there are no perfect ways to draft, curious where your heads are re: ideal auction drafting. Are you the type of person to burn over half your money on two elite RBs? Do you focus on back-end RB1s and back-end WR1s so you have enough left over to grab an elite QB and elite TE?

Last night I did a live-tweeted a mock auction draft: https://twitter.com/_FF4W/status/1162833757621182465. Was out of practice and left way too much money on the table. After the 66th pick, no one was taken for more than $9, and starting around the 80th, it was around $3 at the most. So my big mistake was not reaching for an extra elite positional player.

In the end, my team consisted of QBs Cam Newton and Jared Goff; RBs Nick Chubb, Kerryon Johnson, Austin Ekeler, Royce Freeman, Kareem Hunt, Darrell Henderson, and Jaylen Samuels; WRs: Kenny Golladay, Chris Godwin, A.J. Green, and Curtis Samuel; TE David Njoku; Bears DST, and kicker Greg Zuerlein. So I could have invested in someone like JuJu Smith-Schuster ($48) or Devonta Freeman ($39) instead of Samuel ($3) and still had enough cash to get everyone else. It was only one draft, but it was informative. From my perspective, burning $70 on a top-5 pick makes less sense than grabbing the equivalent of two early-second-round-caliber players for about $80--especially if you think those second-rounders are undervalued.

Tossing it out to all of you. What's your ideal auction draft?
