Introducing the FF4W Challenge

One of the biggest frustrations with fantasy drafting stems from simple human nature: wanting players we can't have. Suppose I draft Saquon Barkley first overall, then wait not-very-patiently as most/all of the remaining "best" players get taken. Then with three picks remaining before it gets back to me, I've got my eye on three high-floor, high-upside targets. "Just need one or two to fall into my lap," I think. But then all three are drafted, leaving me annoyed and scrambling.

What if we had more control over drafting? What if opponents didn't interfere? Later this month I'll introduce a new competition that's one part Best Ball (draft and you're done), one part DFS (pick your own players), and one part "Let's make this a little more interesting."

The FF4W Challenge involves picking a fantasy team comprised of two QBs, two RBs, two WRs, a TE, a flex option, and two superflex options. It'll be free and open to everyone. There's no prize money, and the rules are fairly simple:

Step 1: Review the PPR average draft position (ADP) for every player. We'll use Fantasy Pros' ADPs to keep things universal: https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/adp/ppr-overall.php. And we'll kick this off on Sunday, September 1--after all the preseason games and four days before Week 1.

Step 2: Pick any player from the 1-10 ADP group, another player from the 11-20 ADP group, and so on through the 71-80 ADP group. Your team must consist of two QBs, two RBs, two WRs, a TE, and a flex option (RB, WR, or TE).

Step 3: Pick any two players outside the top 300 ADP. These are your superflex players, and can come from any of the six core positions: QB, RB, WR, TE, K, and/or DST. Step 4: Submit your 10-player team to me by 8:00pm Eastern on Thursday, September 5 (right before Week 1).

So to be clear, if you want in, there's nothing to do 'til September 1, when preseason ADPs will stabilize before the first regular season game. Then after you send it to me, you're done.

When the season ends, I'll add up the fantasy points for each submission (based on pro-football-reference.com's PPR results) and then divide it by the number of games they played, also per Pro Football Reference. Why not make it "most fantasy points wins"? Because you might pick brilliantly, and then midseason three of your guys get knocked out for the year. I want to minimize the adverse impact of bad luck. Isaiah Crowell played all 16 games in 2017 and finished 30th in RB fantasy, beating out the much better (and injury-riddled) Chris Thompson by three points. But while Crowell was 41st in points per game, Thompson was 12th. The FF4W Challenge will reward those who pick someone like Thompson.

I'll try to send out another reminder later this month, and then will formally announce it first on Twitter (_FF4W). If you want in, you know what to do. And if any of you are highly technologically capable and want to create some incredible online inputting machine, I'd be grateful to hear from you.  Otherwise, I'll simply take manual entries.
