Impact of NFL RB Cuts and the Sam Bradford Trade, and First WRAL.com Article

Yesterday the NFL shed some weight, as scores of players—some formerly promising 2016 contributors—were cast to free agency. Here are some fantasy-relevant RB highlights (or lowlights, depending on perspective):

  • Justin Forsett – I’ve been warning against drafting him all summer. For some reason his RB ADP has remained in the 30s. There’s too much budding talent in that backfield to waste salary on Forsett. The veteran might return to Baltimore at a lower salary, but he’ll still be undraftable. Terrance West is the best bet near term to lead this team, while a healthy Kenneth Dixon offers the most upside.
  • Tyler Gaffney – Once given an outside shot at decent snaps in New England, his departure solidifies LeGarrette Blount and James White as the Pats’ lead RBs—at least until Dion Lewis returns.
  • Andre Williams – I’m giving a bump to Paul Perkins, as the aging Rashad Jennings / Shane Vereen combo aren’t a great bet to be fantasy relevant all season.
  • Ronnie Hillman – Been high on Devontae Booker and down on Hillman since June. C.J. Anderson will open the season as the lead back, but Booker now solidifies his place as one of the league’s top RB handcuffs.
  • Jacquizz Rodgers – Rookie Jordan Howard finally stepped up in his last preseason game, giving him a great shot at handcuff duties behind Jeremy Langford.

Additionally, neither Teddy Bridgewater’s injury nor Sam Bradford’s arrival in Minnesota should have any significant impact on any positional player. In my view, the Vikings wasted a first-round pick on Bradford, who won’t do much better than backup Shaun Hill would have done. However, I’m still evaluating what Bradford’s departure from Philly will mean to the Eagles’ positional players—particularly Jordan Matthews and Zach Ertz. Between Chase Daniel and Carson Wentz, I don’t envision better numbers than what Bradford would have produced. That said, I tentatively remain bullish on Ertz.

Finally, as many of you know, I’m contributing two weekly articles to North Carolina’s WRAL.com this season. They’ll be in the voice of the narrator from the book “Fantasy Football for Winners.” The first one posted a few days ago:
