Nearly 24 hours after claiming the 55th ranked WR Roddy White will exceed expectations, I'm doubling down: He'll be a top 25 WR today. Maybe it was the great night of sleep I had. Or maybe it was the morning run (battling high cholesterol). I feel as clear-headed as ever about White busting out to the tune of 80+ yards and a score. How can I be so stupid?
Two news items are pushing me further in this direction:
(1) Julio Jones' hamstring tightened this week, and he still hasn't practiced fully. He'll test it during pre-game warm-ups. If he can't play, well, then White is a more obvious start. Even if he does play, hamstrings have a way of messing with players in game situations--particularly receivers who rely on speed (i.e. most receivers). He's no lock to produce WR1 numbers today in a plus matchup, giving other receivers--including White--a likely boost.
(2) According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, three teams are considering trading for White. Now what's more likely: Atlanta freezes out their WR veteran today, keeping his trade value pretty low . . . or targeting him more than usual and driving up his marketability? The Falcons will showcase White to the tune of 8+ targets--likely good for first or second on the team. Assuming White delivers, they'll have more leverage in trade negotiations.
Starting White is not for the meek. It is for the DFS players and the "I'm rolling with Heath Miller as my flex" owners who need to go for the home run. But the point is, he'll be a top 25 WR, conservatively.
Other underrated guys to target:
Jameis Winston is quietly putting together a decent rookie campaign--at least from a fantasy perspective, where he's ranked 16th among QBs. He has a fantastic matchup and is coming off his worst game. Expect 18+ fantasy points, with a 50=50 shot at 23+. If I didn't have solid QBs starting for me this week, I'd pounce on Winston as a fantastic flier.
Alex Smith is also coming off a terrible game and is facing an anemic Bears D. He and Jeremy Maclin--and a rebounding Travis Kelce--will make fantasy owners and DFS players very happy today. Smith is a near lock for 18+ points. Maclin is obvious, so no need to waste words on him. And Kelce will remind folks why he's a top 6 TE.
Should I recommend Maxx Williams for the second straight week? The rookie tight end disappointed last Sunday with starting TE Crockett Gillmore sidelined. With Steve Smith also out this week--and Kamar Aiken being one of the most trendy sleeper WRs--Williams has a decent shot at TE1 numbers. I'll say 7+ points today as he moves a step closer to fantasy relevancy.
