The Case for Denard Robinson and Jordan Todman

A few weeks ago I went out on a limb on this blog and predicted that Toby Gerhart would not be a top 30 fantasy RB this season. My goal every year is to hit at least 65% of my outlandish predictions. Last year I hit 7 out of 10. The Gerhart call seemed like the most obvious at the time, as you can read below in the August 20th post.

Last night on ESPN 780 Boise, I double-downed on this prediction, telling host Rick Worthington that Denard Robinson and Jordan Todman are among the best waiver options this week. Then I Tweeted it. Now I'm posting it here. This ain't a casual comment.

Gerhart's sprained ankle aside, he's simply not a startable fantasy option. This may annoy those who picked him in the 4th or 5th round. But I'm not here to make friends. While ESPN ranked him this preseason as the 22nd best fantasy RB (49th overall), and Yahoo and CBS Sports ranked him as the 15th best RB (31st and 28th overall, respectively), my final preseason rankings placed him as the #34 RB and #92 overall fantasy option. In other words, he was no better than a 7th or 8th round flier, and that means in basically every league, someone else would be (un)lucky enough to get him.

Gerhart's 2.3 yards per carry vs. the Eagles on Sunday should have surprised no one. He was and remains one of the most overrated fantasy players, and it's only a matter of time before Jags management gives Todman (or more likely, Robinson) significantly more playing time.

There's a decent chance I'll be wrong. My bold preseason predictions are looking a bit mixed at the moment with six (including being sky-high on the Texans D and Matt Ryan) hitting the mark Week 1 and four (including being down on the 49ers D and Pierre Garcon) missing the mark.

But the advice still stands: If you have plenty of bench space, you could do far worse than picking up a guy like Denard Robinson, or secondarily, Jordan Todman. And if I'm wrong, a few thousand of you know where to find me.
