Bold Prediction Flashback: Frank Gore

Top 10 Unconventional Fantasy Predictions FLASHBACK:
#7 . . .

Last preseason, I predicted that "Frank Gore will be just barely a top 20 fantasy RB."

Well, he finished at #13. I didn't nail this pick, but did come reasonably close. His yards per carry (4.1) dropped to an all-time low, while carrying the ball the third most times of his career. Not a good combination heading into his age-31 season.

Almost buried in this middling prediction was the warning about his second half production:

"During the first half of [2012]--with QB Alex Smith at the helm--Gore averaged 5.5 YPC. And the last half with Kaepernick starting? Gore had only 4.0 YPC."

Was it Kaepernick, or was it age catching up with Gore? With Kaep the every week starter in 2013, Gore didn't just replicate his 2nd half stumbles--he amplified it. Last year he had 106 fantasy points (standard scoring) in Weeks 1-8. After his Week 9 bye, Gore amassed only 60 fantasy points in Weeks 10-17. In other words, if you invested a 2nd or 3rd round pick on Gore, he gave you only 7.5 fantasy points per game in the latter half of your season.

So while I didn't nail this prediction, it was a warning that, if heeded, would have saved you some headaches down the stretch.
