The Case for Selling High on Nick Foles

This is the fantasy story about an overrated QB2. His name is Nick Foles.

One of my rules of thumb--and something I describe repeatedly in my book--is not to get swept away by unsustainable trends. When Eddie Royal scored 5 TDs in the season's first 2 games, I told people to sell high. Many fantasy footballers in the community protested. They thought I was a moron. "Why get rid of a guy who's playing like the best WR in the NFL?"

Because elite players frequently perform at high levels. But mediocre talent--when performing at high levels--eventually return to mediocrity.

Foles has 16 passing TDs and 0 INTs. He's no more likely to sustain this achievement than QB Mark Sanchez was in 2010. Remember Sanchez? 8 TDs and 0 INTs thru the season's first 4 games. FF managers everywhere jumped at the chance to pick him up, thinking he would somehow duplicate and triplicate his efforts.

Foles' 2013 crash is inevitable. He didn't suddenly become a 100% better QB after losing the starting job this preseason. He isn't an elite talent after posting below-pedestrian numbers in 2012. Yes, he plays in a terrific offense scheme. It's not as if his TD total will freeze.

But coaches and players get paid a lot of money to figure out how to slow down or stop opposing offenses. Elite QBs are tough to slow down. Middling QBs like Foles? It's a matter of "when," not "if." Sell high now. You've been warned.
